How to Connect to a Minecraft Java Edition Server
Join your Minecraft Java Edition server, invite friends, and check common connection problems.
Open Dashboard → Servers, choose Manage on your server, and find Connection. Copy Address, including the colon and number at the end. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition with the version used by your server.
Connect
- Select Multiplayer → Add Server.
- Enter any name you like in Server Name.
- Paste the full Address into Server Address.
- Select Done, select the saved server, then choose Join Server.
Invite friends
Share the complete address and required Minecraft version. Each friend uses their own Minecraft account. If the owner uses an allowlist, give them your Minecraft username so they can add you.
If you cannot join
Java and Bedrock Edition use different clients. Check the server’s version and any required client mods. If the game says you are not allowlisted, ask the owner to add your username.
Still stuck? Check the server’s status in Jovian, allow startup time, then contact Support with its ID and the error message.
Which Java variants use these steps?
Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, SpongeVanilla, and Limbo use the same join screen. Limbo is a waiting/lobby server, so joining it may not put you into a survival world. Server plugins alone usually do not need matching client installations; follow the owner’s instructions for any additional requirements.
See plugins vs. mods or Paper vs. Purpur.
