Space Engineers Dedicated Server Requirements

Check Keen's dedicated-server minimums and recommendations, then plan for your Space Engineers world, grids, scripts, and player activity.

Keen lists 6 GB RAM as the dedicated-server minimum and 10 GB as recommended. Start your planning from the recommended specification if you want breathing room, then test your actual world. A large collection of moving ships can ask more of a server than a new world with the same number of players.

These are dedicated-server figures from Keen's official guide, not the requirements for rendering the game on your own PC.

Clock speed alone doesn't make two different processors equivalent. Treat these as the developer's reference specifications rather than a ranking of every modern server CPU.

The world matters as much as the head count

In Space Engineers, a grid is a collection of connected blocks, such as a ship or station. Think about what your group is building: a few stationary outposts, lots of active ships, automated machinery, or a busy modded world.

Those are useful details to give a host when asking about capacity. “Eight players” leaves out most of that information. For an existing world, test a copy with representative activity, rather than judging a fresh empty map.

Watch simulation behavior as well as memory. If everyone sees slowed physics but memory is not exhausted, investigate processing load and world settings. More RAM can't guarantee a fix for every simulation slowdown.

Self-hosting software requirements

Keen's documented server setup is Windows-based and lists .NET 4.8 or newer and the required Visual C++ redistributables. An administrator account is needed if you run the server as a Windows service. That's a background program Windows can keep running without an open game session.

You don't need a second gaming account just to keep a player's character logged in. The dedicated server runs independently. Follow Keen's current installation guide for downloads and prerequisites rather than assuming the client install is the whole setup.

For managed hosting, let the provider handle that environment. Don't pick an operating system for a self-hosted machine solely because another game server uses it.

Before moving your main world

Make a backup and record the game version, mods, and important settings. Load a copy, join with a friend, and exercise the builds your group cares about. Check that saving and reconnecting work before retiring the old host.

If a mod update changes behavior, that record gives you a useful starting point for troubleshooting. Repeatedly restarting or raising every limit at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
