How to Set Up a RedM Server Key

Create a Cfx.re server registration key for RedM, understand CFX_LICENSE, and avoid confusing the key with a Steam token or server name.

RedM needs a Cfx.re server registration key. Create it in the Cfx.re Portal, then enter it in Jovian's CFX_LICENSE field. This is a server credential, not a Steam GSLT or a Red Dead Redemption 2 purchase key.

RedM is the multiplayer framework for custom Red Dead Redemption 2 servers. Its server software shares the Cfx.re platform with FiveM, which is why some official instructions use FiveM terminology.

Create your registration key

  1. Open the Cfx.re Portal and sign in to the account that should own the server registration.
  2. Open the server registration keys section.
  3. Select Create a key or the equivalent key-generation action.
  4. Enter a recognizable display name and generate the key.
  5. Open the new key and copy it.

These steps follow the registration-key section of Cfx.re's setup documentation. Follow the Portal's current labels if they change. Older tutorials may send you to Keymaster or show fields that aren't in the current flow.

Keep this under an account you control. A friend helping you build the server shouldn't be the only person who can manage its registration.

Put the key in the correct field

On Jovian's RedM setup, CFX_LICENSE is where the registration key goes. SERVER_HOSTNAME is the name players see. Don't paste the secret key into the hostname field.

For a server you manage yourself, Cfx.re calls the configuration setting sv_licenseKey. RedM also uses the game identifier rdr3. Both are documented in the server command reference; you don't need to edit those settings manually when Jovian's setup handles them.

The registration key doesn't install a roleplay framework, configure jobs, or supply maps and scripts. Those are separate choices. Get the basic server running before adding a large collection of resources, so a startup failure has fewer possible causes.

If the key is rejected

First check that you copied the complete key, without extra spaces or quotation marks. Confirm you copied a server registration key from the correct Cfx.re account rather than another service's API key.

Then read the startup error. An authentication error and a broken gameplay resource need different fixes. Keep the key out of any screenshot or log excerpt you send to support. If you think it has been exposed, manage or replace it through the Portal before continuing to use it.

For a name and password refresher, see server configuration basics. Once the key is ready, continue with the RedM game page; Jovian handles the underlying infrastructure.
