DayZ Server Passwords and RCON
Understand the server, admin, and RCON passwords used by your Jovian DayZ server.
DayZ uses several different passwords, and each one controls something different. When configuring your Jovian DayZ server, it is important not to mix up the Server Password, Admin Password, and RCON Password.
Server Password
The Server Password controls who can join your DayZ server.
- Leave it blank if you want anyone to be able to join.
- Set a password if you want a private server for friends or a closed community.
- Players will be prompted for this password when they connect.
This password does not grant administrator access.
Admin Password
The Admin Password is used to authenticate as a DayZ server administrator.
It is separate from the normal Server Password. Do not use the same password unless you specifically want both credentials to be identical.
Because the admin password grants elevated control over the server, use a strong password and only share it with people you trust to administer the server.
RCON Password
RCON (remote console) allows compatible external tools to manage your DayZ server remotely.
Your Jovian DayZ server requires an RCON Password. This credential is used by RCON clients and services such as server-management or monitoring tools that connect to the server's RCON port.
The RCON password:
- is not the password players use to join the server
- is not the DayZ admin password
- should be treated as an administrative credential
- should not be posted publicly or shared with regular players
The DayZ server supports a maximum RCON password length of 20 characters in the server configuration used by Jovian.
Which password do I need?

If you only want a normal public DayZ server, you can leave the Server Password and Admin Password blank, but you still need to configure an RCON Password.
Server name and player limit
Your DayZ configuration also includes a Server Name and Max Players setting.
Server Name is the name players see in the DayZ server browser.
Max Players controls the maximum number of players allowed to connect. The server software may support a high player count, but the practical number of players your server can handle depends on the Jovian server size, mods, and workload.
Mods
DayZ supports client and server-side mods, but mod configuration is separate from these passwords. If you are configuring mods, do not put Workshop IDs, mod names, or other mod settings into any password field.
Having trouble?
If players cannot join, first confirm that you have not accidentally configured a Server Password.
If an administrator cannot authenticate, verify that they are using the Admin Password, not the RCON Password.
If an external RCON tool cannot connect, verify the RCON Password and that the tool is connecting to the server's assigned RCON port.
